Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (MSK Ultrasound) offers a convenient extension of the Rheumatologists clinical skill in evaluating inflammatory disorders. MSKUltrasound allows physicians to look beneath the surface to evaluate the severity of disorders and make more confident diagnoses.
With greater sensitivity than traditional x-ray, musculoskeletal ultrasound is a powerful tool in detecting and evaluating joint inflammation in the early stages of rheumatoid arthritis.
The procedure is dynamic and time-efficient as no extensive patient preparation is involved.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound allows high-resolution, real-time imaging of articular and periarticular structures and has the advantages of being non-radioactive, inexpensive, portable, highly acceptable to patients and repeatable.
Use musculoskeletal ultrasound in Rheumatology in order to:
- Evaluate the presence of tenosynovitis
- Find erosions in accessible joints
- Look for evidence of pannus and active inflammation.
- Identify and evaluate complications, such as tendon rupture and carpal tunnel disease
- Look for vasculitides, temporal arteries
Ultrasound needle guidance will enhance the effectiveness of needle puncture for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
